They are acutely affected by things other people may have no awareness of, for example: other people’s energies, different forms of lighting, smells, food allergies + sensitivities, noise and EMF pollution.

Luckily there are many strategies to help with the stress of travel and long journeys.

1. Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated is the single best way to ensure a positive traveling experience. The air inside the cabin of a plane has a humidity level of about 10 to 20 percent which is much lower than a comfortable, typical indoor humidity of 30 to 65 percent. Dehydration can be a real problem for people with respiratory issues such as asthma. It can cause dry and irritated skin and eyes and an increased risk of catching a virus. Humidity keeps the mucosa of your airways moist so that it can trap pathogens trying to get into your body. When the mucosa is dried out from dehydration, viral and bacterial pathogens can pass through easier. Dehydration can also cause fatigue, lethargy and body aches and pains.

The Functions of Water in Our Body Include:

Gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements

Keeps your temperature normal

Lubricates and cushions joints

Protects sensitive tissues

So How much Water should I drink?

The National Academy of Sciences recommends adequate fluid intake to be:

About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men

About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women

These fluids can include water, other beverages and food. About 20% of our fluid intake comes from food ~ 540 mL for women. During plane travel those numbers increase due to the dehydrated environment. Continuous fluid intake during plane travel is important. Once you are past security you can load up on purified water, fresh juices or smoothies like Odwalla and Happy Planet.
Keeping your skin hydrated will feel better as well. Pack a non-toxic lotion or cream to put on during the flight to reduce dry and itchy skin.

References:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/water/art-20044256
https://www.everydayhealth.com/healthy-travel/air-travel-and-dehydration.aspx

2. Hearing is one of our senses that gets overwhelmed during air travel. Ear plugs are handy and can be carried in any pocket and used at any time.

For a high level of sound barrier, consider purchasing a set of noise cancelling headphones. They work even without the use of music. Which means you can use them to help you sleep on long flights.

They range in price but a perfectly good pair by JVC is going for under $200, and wireless. Here is a review of noise cancelling headsets for 2019.

Meditation + Breathing Exercises

Although the last thing you probably want to do is become mindful during a long travel day, it can be helpful to connect into the presence of your body using breathing and meditation techniques.

Breathing exercises help bring oxygen into the blood and tissues which is compromised during air travel. Sitting for long periods of time reduces oxygen exposure to the lower extremities and can make muscles feel tight, or painful. Make sure to get up as often as you can, choose an aisle seat so you feel free to do so, to walk the aisle, stretch your joints and keep the lymph moving throughout your body.

Technique 1 – simply putting your hand over your abdomen, closing your eyes and taking a long deep breath in for the count of 7, holding for 4 and breathing out for 8 can reduce anxiety and increase a sense of peace. Just ask Dr. Andrew Weil who invented it at Harvard.

Technique 2 – Guided meditation. Yoga Nidra is an excellent guided meditation for relaxing. Consider downloading some pre-recorded audio before your flight so you have something to tune into during the flight. Doyogawithme.com has a large assortment of yoga nidra for download as do other pay sites like Spotify.

Meditation has been shown to lower anxiety, reduce depression, pain and improve sleep. Why not get acquainted to a form that works for you while you have virtually nothing else to do?

References:https://www.drweil.com/health-wellness/body-mind-spirit/stress-anxiety/breathing-three-exercises/

4. And some work well for relaxing, while others affect EMF pollution around you. Consider going to a crystal store and picking up the stones one at a time. Notice what washes over you? A sense of calm? Anxiety? Connection? These physical aids are worth investigating for their positive effects on the body. You can carry these on your body in a pocket or for a closer connection they can do directly on your skin by tucking them into your bra, or as a jewellery piece like a bracelet.

I don’t have any scientific studies to back this selection up, but you can try them for yourself and make your own decision. For travelling consider:
Flourite + Shungite - to block EMF pollution
Jet – for relaxation and grounding
Hematite – for a grounding sense, and to stimulate concentration and focus
Howlite – to reduce anxiety

Crystals are also beautiful to look at, and even if it’s a placebo effect to think you have something that is keeping you safe and protected, well it’s at least 30% effective which is more than some pharmaceuticals.

References:
https://thechalkboardmag.com/travel-nerves-carry-on-crystals
http://www.happiestwhenexploring.com/packing/7-crystals-for-travel/
https://askronandsue.com.au/Crystal-healing-top-10-crystals-for-travel/
http://originstones.com/7-essential-stones-for-travel/

5. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils and they have scientific evidence of their actions. You can bring your favorite one with you, or consider making a blend diluted in a carrier oil in a roll applicator on for a specific purpose.

Deep Blue by Doterra – pain relief. One or two drops at the base of the spine, or occiput. Can be bought as a topical lotion with the same effects.
Lavender – promote relaxation, anti-anxiety, sedation
Rosemary – cerebral circulatory stimulant, uplifting
Orange – uplifting, anti-depressant
Rosewood – anti-depressant

It can also be a good idea to travel with an antiseptic and antimicrobial essential oil in case you need to use it topically or in an inhalation during an upper respiratory tract infection.

Tea tree + Eucalyptus globulus essential oils – are both antiseptic and antimicrobial. They useful for fungal skin infections like tinea (ring worm) or onychomycosis (toenail fungus). They can be applied to closed skin directly or diluted in a carrier oil. Eucalyptus is especially useful in case of a cold or sinus issue. 4 drops of oil can be added to a pot of recently boiled water, for a steam inhalation using a towel draped over your head. Remember to be careful of the steam, it is very hot and can burn, and to keep your eyes closed! 5 minutes is all that is needed to provide antimicrobial action to your nasal tract to reduce swelling and congestion.

Reference:
https://www.aromaweb.com/essential-oils/eucalyptus-oil.asp
https://www.pranarom.com
https://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/essential-oils#orange-essential-oil

Traveling can be difficult depending on the duration and how sensitive you are. If there was inflammation prior to beginning that weight loss can be more in the first few days and usually tapers off. Towards the end of a fast, the weight loss can reduce to 0.5-1.0 lbs per day.

The amount of weight and percentage of adipose tissue to skeletal muscle all depends on the weight and amount of fat you start out with. Thin people derive more of their energy during a fast from protein than an obese person does.

Here's why:

- Lean people derive 40% of their energy from protein during a fast and obese people 5%.

-During prolonged fasting, fat oxidation accounts for approximately 94% of energy expenditure in obese subjects, compared to only 78% in lean subjects. Protein oxidation accounts for the remainder of the energy, since there is almost no carbohydrate stores left in the body after the first 24 hours or so.

- Although an obese person has a larger amount of protein based on size, the physiology of fasting favors the destruction of adipose tissue. In the absence of adipose, protein will be used to power the brain, heart and organ systems.

Reference: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10574520

2. Should I add salt to my water?

Although there is much talk on facebook fasting groups about supplementing with electrolytes or specifically Himalayan salt, there should be no reason why someone would require salt in their water during a fast. In fact, it could even be detrimental.

The kidneys are the organ in our body responsible for maintaining electrolyte balance in the body. It conserves sodium and potassium or wastes it depending on what the body needs. People with severe kidney impairment have a hard time balancing their electrolytes and aren’t good candidates for water fasting.

Before beginning a water fast, thorough blood work should be done and reviewed by a fasting physician and again every 7 days to ensure the proper electrolyte balance is being maintained by the body.

Fluctuations in calcium and potassium are of importance when it comes to heart functioning. Low or too high potassium and calcium can be a risk of cardiac infarction aka heart attack.

3. How much water should I drink?

The suggested amount of water intake during our retreats is 2L per day of a pure water source. We recommend using reverse osmosis water as our number one recommended water source. Good quality water in the form of distilled water, purified, and spring water can be considered as well as Kangen or pH controlled water if done properly.

We don’t recommend drinking anything other than water on a water fast in contrast to other fasting doctors who suggest coffee and herbal tea as an addition to water. There are potent and well documented effects of herbal infusions or the bitter action of coffee that are in stark contrast to the number one principle of water fasting, which is leaving the body alone to heal.

It is through this process, of doing nothing, that the greatest healing and teaching is available.

4. How should I break my fast?

Breaking a fast is arguably the most important part of the fasting process. Following a fast the gut has been left alone to heal, and what goes into it will determine whether the healing continues, and the proper gut flora is repopulated or not.

Our water fasts are generally broken with the broth of 5 Element Soup and either a fresh, peeled vegetable such as cucumber or a juice fruit like watermelon. Fresh fruits and vegetables are filled with the live active enzymes a resting gut needs to break food down. And the nutrients, vitamins and minerals, to continue the healing process.

The number of days of reintroduction should be around half the number of days spend in active fast. For some people, they will chose to, or require a slower reintroduction. With a delayed introduction of allium species e.g. garlic and onion because of their corrosive volatile oils which can damage the sensitive gut lining.

The process of reintroduction progresses from liquids and broths to mono meals of fruits and peeled vegetables the size of your fist, to steamed vegetables. And from steamed vegetables to complex vegetarian meals 3 times a day. Each meal can be accompanied by the 5 Element broth for nutrition and warmth. One of the side effects of fasting is lowered body temperature. People enjoy having a warm cup of broth to warm up their system and encourage digestive fires, also known as Spleen Qi in Traditional Chinese medicine.

No salt or strong herbs or oils are used during the reintroduction but can be added in progressively. Avoiding high calorie foods like nuts is suggested so that weight is not put on too quickly. Maintaining a vegetarian diet for as long as possible is recommended. For people looking to continue their healing a raw food diet can be implemented with similar benefits, at a slower rate, compared to water fasting.

5. The length of time you should fast for can be determined in consultation with a qualified fasting doctor.

It take women 48 hours to enter into ketosis and 72 hours for men, generally speaking. Every day of a water fast offers immense healing compared to any other treatment modality available. Some conditions have been treated commonly with water fasting and their recommendation is as follows:

3 days – Full regeneration of the immune system, reduced blood pressure, digestive discomfort
7 days – Hypertension, Hypercholesterolemia,
10 days – Osteoarthritis, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), IBS, migraines, chronic pain
14 days – Fibroids,
21 days – Autoimmune disease: Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Crohn’s, Colitis,

These suggested number of days doesn’t mean that a shorter fast won’t significantly improve your condition. There is also credibility for practicing sequential shorter fasts as well as a fasting-mimicking diet, also known as intermittent fasting.

For full details on how to break a fast, prepare for a fast, what to expect and what to do during fasting check out our water fasting guide available here.

For a recommendation specific to your case, consider a consultation with Dr. Ariel Jones.

Available online and over the phone.

RAW FOOD & PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION

https://www.drarieljones.com/blog/raw-food-personal-transformation

https://www.drarieljones.com/blog/raw-food-personal-transformation#comments

Detoxification

Inner Work

Personal Transformation - What is it? Each year, several times a year we offer a Raw Food Detox & Personal Transformation Retreat in Hawaii. So what does it mean to personally transform and how do we do it? The most powerful sensations of transformation happen when many parts of the person are addressed in an intensive and supportive setting. Specifically, transformation is the process of change. And that can happen on many levels.

Physical Level

This is the process of DETOXIFICATION. This word is used widely to describe many different things: a drink, a cleanse, a topical product, abstinence from an addiction or habit. In reality detoxification is a ubiquitous process continually happening in the body, specifically, the liver. In a 3 step process the liver uses to remove toxins from our blood, all day long; a series of biochemical reactions using amino acids, vitamins and phytochemicals. Our bodies derive these substances from the food we eat.
Increasing the rate of detoxification is possible using food, nutritional supplements and herbs. For food, raw food diet, is a detox booster, containing live enzymes, nutrients, minerals and the amino acids required in all biochemical reactions.

Getting rid of the toxins stored in our bodies helps it run better.

What does that look like? It could mean a complete resolution of an illness. For example, hormone conditions respond very well to a liver detox such as: acne, PMS, irregular cycles, eczema, psoriasis, digestive issues (reflux, bloating, constipation). It also means increased energy, better bowel movements, less seasonal illness, improved sex drive and nicer skin.

Raw food also helps to lose weight. Nothing feels better than reducing inflammation and getting rid of excess weight. Without the hard to digest aspects of processed or allergenic foods, every part of the meal aids health. Whether it is the actual nutrient content or soluble and insoluble fiber, or live enzymes, the body is given a tool to succeed.

Reducing toxin load, eliminating inflammation and lowering weight can be a total transformation on its own. But there are 4 other parts of a person that can have a dramatic effect when addressed.

Mental Level

What processes do we have happening in our minds that feel good, and which feel bad?

What does the bad feel like?
Anxiety? Even if we are in pain, but we perceive it to be helpful or for our benefit, we are not in suffering. Mental transformation can, on its own, feel like we have lost weight, when in reality we have just lightened our mental burden.

The Work by Byron Katie is a helpful tool we use on our retreats as well as journalling, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the work of Dr. Lissa Rankin and other tools.

Emotional Level

One of the hardest things in life is to feel discomfort in its varied intensities. Learning how to process emotions is a necessary tool to minimize the actions we take to avoid possibly feeling it.

Once we are free of the need to avoid emotional discomfort (fear, guilt, anger, shame, rage) we are transformed in how we live our daily life and how we make decisions.
We are able to live a more open hearted life, experience courage and a sense of self worth.

Emotional change can happen in many ways: talk therapy, plant-spirit medicine ceremonies, breathwork, hands on treatments such as massage and colon hydrotherapy , group support and many more.

Why not examine what exists deep down in the matrix of your being? Maybe once it is identified, you can be free?

Spiritual Level

Today's culture in North America is one that is largely devoid of a unified spiritual practice. Most people do not devote a portion of their day, month or year to a spiritual practice, whatever that may be: praying in community, meditation, ceremony, yoga, mantra reciting, retreat, singing or being in nature.

But for centuries humans have acknowledged a spiritual realm, a part of our make up that is unseen. Something that leaves the earth when our earth suit dies. Spirituality can be based on a one or many-god theory, idols or people worship.

One benefit of a spiritual practice is faith. Faith is something we call on when our mental faculties can't solve a problem or guarantee a favourable outcome. With faith is another principle called trust. Trust is the antidote to fear and anxiety.

Spiritual change can also be an acknowledgement that there is a unifying force in all living beings.

Addressing the spiritual realm is an important part of a personal transformation if not to broaden our view's of the world, to plant the seed of faith and trust in this unknown and ever changing process called life.

Energetic Level

Energy is hard to define in all its capacities. Each scientific department has its own definition of energy. In physics, energy is a term denoting a quantitative substance that allows objects to do "work". In biology it is a measure of ATP currency contained in each cell, or the amount of force required to cause a chemical reaction.

Energy is a force. We experience forces physically, when they happen directly to our solid being, but also from the pitch of someone voice, the commanding tone in spoken words, in persistent dialogue, in weather systems, from a compelling idea, from hearing someone speak or in the presence of a loved one to name a few.

Becoming sensitive to the energies in your life can help create a feeling of ease as we respond to them with conscious choices. One way to become sensitive to energy is to become embodied. Meaning aware of how it feels to be in your body. The practice of this is called mindfulness. It is the act of putting our sense awareness into the physical body and how it feels as it interacts with its environment: the movement of air over skin, the weight and seams of your clothes, your contact with the earth, sounds heard close by and far away. It's a never ending list.

The sum of its parts

Personal transformation can happen in any or many areas of the human experience. By bringing awareness to each area, and effecting positive change we are able to move through difficult or disease states at an appreciable pace. We include specific programming into the week to enhance the detoxification process and teach new skills on living a healthier and more radiant life!

1. Skin Brushing

Helps to move the lymph fluid (aka as lymph tissue) from the periphery of the body, hand and feet to the heart where it can be processed and excreted. The lymph system is the sewer system of the body. All the cells in our body produce waste, as a by product of cellular metabolism (making energy!). This waste gets booted out of the cell and into the lymph. By using a skin brush we can help move this waste back to the heart, and into the liver and out through our fecal waste.

For more information click here

Bodecare Brushes Australia - All Natural and 100% Organic

2. Enemas

Enemas are administered in the morning and they help to move bile out of the body which is a byproduct of all the hard work the liver is doing, detoxifying our blood from the toxins and waste materials that are mobilized during a fast. Bile irritates the small intestine and can make people feel nauseous and uncomfortable. Learning how to perform an enema is a good skill to have especially for green coffee enemas, which can be useful for: detoxes, headaches, body pain, cancer, arthritis, liver issues, acne and hormonal imbalance.

3. Colonics

This is a good opportunity to have colonics or colon hydrotherapy. Since we are not eating, and the body is already in the process of expelling unwanted toxins, it is an effective time for a colonic to have maximal benefits. Colonics remove built up fecal matter from the large intestine.

Do I have built-up fecal matter in my intestine??
Yes! And it can be pounds of it. This fecal matter sits in the crypts and crevices of the large intestine. The problem is that it impairs the optimal functioning of the large intestine which is primarily water reclamation.

4. Earthing & Forest Bathing

Taking the time to go outside, barefoot, and reconnect to the earth is something the ancient Japanese called Shinrin-yoku. The essential oils produced in defence by plants, wood, some fruit and vegetables help to increase our immune system, in particular the Natural Killer cells (NK).

Forest environments also help to reduce stress by promoting lower concentrations of cortisol, the stress hormone produced in our adrenal glands, lower pulse rate, blood pressure, increase parasympathetic nerve activity, and lower sympathetic nerve activity than do city environments. It also decreases incidence of depression

Earthing is walking barefoot on the earth. Meditation

Our days begin with a short meditation reminding us to reconnect to our inner selves before starting our day where we focus externally. There are over 3000 scientific studies on the benefits of meditation. Some of which include: increasing focus & memory, decreasing anxiety and depression, improve the immune system, enhance self-esteem and self-acceptance, prevents emotional eating and smoking.

6. Yoga

Gentle yoga is a great way to improve the detoxification process. In yoga we contract our muscles which helps to move lymph through our body. Increasing flexibility and strength is a common outcome from the daily yoga, helping people feel more energetic, and capable in their daily lives. Restorative yoga teaches us how to deeply relax and connect to our breath. A 3 day water fast can offer a total regeneration of the immune system. People taking pharmaceutical medications

During water fasting the digestive tract slows down. It stops secreting digestive enzymes required to breakdown food and medications. People taking 1 or more prescriptions are at a risk of taking too much of their medication while water fasting since less is needed.

Also, some medications require food for proper absorption and activation. When we eat, the digestive process begins in the mouth with salivary amylase - the enzyme that breaks down sugars. It continues with hydrochloric acid in the stomach which kills bacteria and breaks down food. The food mass (known as chyme) that proceeds to the small intestine is acidic. Chyme activates the enzymes released from the pancreas into the small intestine. Without this acidity the enzymes are not activated to break the molecular bonds in foods and medications.

Consider adding a dense and compact pill into a gut without acidic chyme and activated enzymes. Luckily some medications are small and dissolve easily which allows for absorption but not all. People on pharmaceuticals need to consult with, and be monitored by, a medical professional when water fasting to ensure proper dosage and a safe fasting experience.

2. People with kidney disease (and other organ issues)

The kidneys regulate electrolyte balance in our bodies primarily sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, magnesium and water. Electrolyte balance is very important for each one of our cells which use ions like these for: cell to cell communication, action potentials, movement of nutrients in and waste out of the cell. In tissue electrolytes can determine whether a muscle contracts or not. When that muscle is the heart, electrolyte balance is vital. Not being able to regulate ion concentration due to kidney disease is a total contraindication to water fasting because, among other things, it can cause cardiac arrest - heart failure.

The liver and other organs each play a role in the body's homeostasis. Liver disease or chronic alcohol or drug use, could be a total contraindication to water fasting because this is where toxins (from metabolism, environment and fat storage) are processed for release through our bile and into our digestive system. Impaired liver function could mean a build up of toxins in the liver, muscles or organs which could cause a serious adverse event. Most of the environmental toxins we are exposed to are fat soluble, meaning they bind and are stored in our fat tissues. During a fast fat is broken down to be used as fuel. The toxins within the fats are then mobilized into circulation. If there is a lot of fat, or a high degree of toxin exposure due to industrial or job site exposure, living near sprayed crops, eating non-organic food, drug or alcohol use, history of poly pharmacy, then there is a lot of toxins for our body to process and all our organs need to be in top working order.

If you are wondering how your organs are functioning, visit your doctor who can run blood tests and perform a physical exam for assessment.

3. People with a current diagnosis or history of eating disorders

The main eating disorders today are: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, a mix of both, orthorexia and disordered eating syndromes. These eating disorders are often present in combination with obsessive compulsive disorder, another absolute contraindication to water fasting. Orthorexia is a newer phenomenon defined as an extreme obsession with being healthy. People with orthorexia have cut out so many things from their diet, in an effort to achieve maximum health, that it is actually unhealthy. This illness is also associated with extreme lifestyles such as:

Compulsive checking of ingredient lists and nutritional labels

An increase in concern about the health of ingredients

Cutting out an increasing number of food groups (all sugar, all carbs, all dairy, all meat, all animal products)

An inability to eat anything but a narrow group of foods that are deemed ‘healthy’ or ‘pure’

Unusual interest in the health of what others are eating

Spending hours per day thinking about what food might be served at upcoming events

Showing high levels of distress when ‘safe’ or ‘healthy’ foods aren’t available

Obsessive following of food and ‘healthy lifestyle’ blogs on Twitter and Instagram

Body image concerns may or may not be present

People with eating disorders may already have calorie, nutrient and electrolyte imbalances and possible organ compromise depending on the severity and duration of the illness. Water fasting is completely contraindicated due to this physical state of depletion and the weight loss associated with water fasting.

The state of starvation is when the body is depleted of the necessary nutrients and calories required to sustain life. In this state the body's organs are compromised, sometimes permanently. When a body enters a state of starvation, medical intervention is necessary and life saving. Someone with a current presentation or history of an eating disorder is at a higher risk of starvation, nutrient and electrolyte imbalance.

In other cases, the illness may not be in total remission, or the fast could trigger a return of symptoms.

4. Fear of fasting

Another contraindication to fasting is having a fear of fasting because of the physiological effects it has on the body. Fear creates anxiety which can cause gut symptoms, increase blood pressure and metabolism. Fear of fasting can precipitate a negative outcome for the fast, whether it is the side effects mentioned above during the fast or difficulty with reintroduction. It is important to be informed about the process of fasting before embarking on a fasting journey and to be clear about your boundaries, health state and fasting plan.

6. Fasting for weight loss

This is a poplar topic on fasting groups online. People talking about how much weight they have lost, asking about how much weight you can lose, how much weight others have lost and complaining that they haven't lost enough. There is a theme. During a water fast people lose between 1-2 lbs per day. I have noticed when people are inflamed to begin with, they can lose more at the onset followed by a tapering and levelling out after 1-4 days.

Water fasting is not a stand alone treatment for weight loss because it doesn't address all of the causes of weight gain. There are many, and compounded, reasons why people overeat or have a high weight, some of which can include:

lack of education around nutrition, portion size, lifestyle & exercise

emotional trauma

coping mechanism for stress

endocrine issues: diabetes & PCOS, leptin desensitization

food addiction

history of eating disorder (starvation can lead to weight gain)

side effect of medications

genetics

It is important to identify the combination of reasons why someone is overweight and address them all. A water fast may be partially indicated.

During food reintroduction there is a weight gain as the body reacts to calories and nutrients coming back into the system. If a food addiction or endocrine imbalance is not addressed, someone could regain the weight they lost during the fast and more.

Water fasting is not a stand alone tool for weight loss.

Who can water fast at home?

"People with generally good health, looking for a reset, who have a relationship with a physician, and are up to date on their health status."

- Dr. Ariel Jones, ND

And even in this case it is important to follow the following guidelines:

1. Fast for a reasonable amount of time

Consider the following age and duration recommendations when thinking about water fasting at home:

Age:
0 - 15 years - Absolute contraindication to water fasting
16 -20 years - Contraindicated unless physician monitored
20 - 49 years - 1 - 7 days
In a residential/In-patient setting, fasting over 7 days necessitates blood work and supervision to make sure your body is responding well to the fast and that you are safe to continue fasting. It is not recommended to fast beyond 7 days without physician supervision.
50+ - Consider getting a workup done by a physician including blood work and physical exam to determine current state of health prior to the fast (see blood work recommendations below). Your current health status will determine the length of a water fast that is safe for you.

Consider trying a 24 hour fast for your first one and make sure to follow my guidelines about How to Prepare for a Water Fast. Once you have experienced a 24 hour fast, you can continue to 48 or 72 hours on your next fast.

Remember to plan an appropriate amount of time for reintroduction which is a time that you have to be mindful of the food you are eating, prepare your food in advance, and consider that you might not be in top performance.

2. Make sure you have time off

Depending on your history of food choices, how much you weigh (toxin load carried in fat) and other forms of toxicity you may have quite an intense detox reaction. This can involve migraines, headaches, body pain, nausea and vomiting, lethargy, weakness and fainting. You do not want the added stress of being at work, or taking care of anyone else when you are water fasting.

The benefits of a water fast go beyond avoiding food. It is a time of increased clarity and connection both with your higher self and the Divine. Take this time to become centred in your body and make room for the downloads and information that will come during the fast. If we are distracted by job tasks, kids or other obligations, this part of the fast can be lost, however the physical benefits remain the same.

3. Have a support network you can connect with

When you begin a fast it is important that someone in your immediate circle is aware and can check in on you for safety and support. Support can also come from someone else committed to doing the fast at the same time.

On facebook, there are water fasting support groups which can be good to find someone going through the same process. However, beware of the medical advice offered on these groups, it can be not only false but dangerous. If you have any medical questions make sure to speak with a professional who can properly assess your symptoms.

4. Fast safely

Get blood work done within 1 month of beginning your fast

CBC with differential - this shows your red and white blood cells

Chemistry panel - to determine your electrolyte balance

ALT, AST, GGT - measurements of liver function

Creatinine, GFR - measurements of kidney function

Lipids - as a treatment marker. Do they improve after the fast?

Any other parameters that are relevant to your case.

Drink enough water - 2L per day

Do not add anything to your water - some people think you should add salt, electrolytes or vitamins into your water. In this post I will supply a guide for how to safely prepare for a water fast to prevent extreme detoxification reactions.

The Build Up

Water fasting is an intensive detoxification process. That means, if you have never detoxed before, or if you are dealing with a signifcant toxic burden (post- chemo, heavy metal exposure, obesity, poor diet), a water fast can have severe reactions.
During the intensive detox phase of a water fast (the first 1-3 days) people can have any number of reactions: dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches or migraines, 10/10 body pains. It is hard to predict exactly how someone will react.
To reduce the likelihood of an intensive detoxification reaction there are a few things you can consider during the preparatory phase. Depending on how toxic you are will depend on the length of time that you should spend preparing for your fast. Longer amounts of time are beneficial for more toxic states.

Here are the options I recommend:

Change Your Diet

3-6 months - History of drug or alcohol use, polypharmacology, chemotherapy, obesity, SIBO, processed food diet

1-3 months - Regular diet, no obesity, no history of prior detoxification, 1 or less regular pharmaceutical medications

Switch to organic foods - as much as possible. Pesticides contain a multitude of toxins which I have written about here.

Stop eating meat - its hard to digest, contains toxins and hormones from the animal, is a weak source of protein, contains saturated fats which in an oxidative state create lasting plaques in arteries. Consider eating a full range of amino acids through vegetables, fruits, seeds (hemp, pumpkin, chia, sunflower), some organic soy and quinoa.

Wean off of coffee and other caffeinated drinks to restore the adrenal glands and prevent caffeine withdrawal.

Avoid gluten and dairy which are both allergenic, mucous producing and hard to digest for more people.

Quit alcohol completely - allowing your liver to recover and use its glutathione for detoxing rather than metabolizing alcohol.

Incorporate fruits and berries each day - 3 servings for antioxidant support which is crucial when detoxing.

Focus on leafy greens 3 - 6 cups per day: lettuces, cabbage, kale, spinach, bitter greens, cilantro, parsley etc. They are full of fiber and provide alkaline support to the body as well as minerals (magnesium) and some vitamins.

Hydrate during the day - 2 L of water or herbal tea which helps flush toxins out

Consider eating as much raw food diet as you can

Smoothies for breakfast or tea or fast (Intermittent Fasting)

Salads with lunch and dinner to increase fiber for detoxification

There are great raw food recipes that can be substituted for almost any normally cooked dish!

Add in Lifestyle Changes

A useful addition to any program to improve your body's ability to detoxify.

Get colonics to help clear out the old and hardened fecal material built up over the years or mucoid plaques which develop over time. 3 colonics over 1 - 2 weeks is my recommendation

Start skin brushing before a bath or shower

Infrared saunas are detoxifying and can be done 1-3 times per week at 42 degrees for 30 minutes. Make sure to work up to this length of time by starting at 15 minutes and working up by 5 minutes each session. Stay hydrated and do your skin brushing before hand.

Juice Cleanse

A juice cleanse can be a great first step towards doing a water fast. It is a gentler detox with fewer detoxification reactions than a water fast. Because sugar is consumed in the form of fructose, the body does not go into ketosis which is the major driving force of detoxification and healing in a water fast. A juice cleanse is a break from digesting and metabolizing which uses about 30% of our energy. Without fiber the vitamins and minerals in the juice are rapidly absorbed for increased nutrition and health. Fresh live juices contain active enzymes which help to break down scar tissue and reduce inflammation. Juices keep us hydrated and help to flush out toxins through the kidneys.

My juice recommendation for a juice cleanse would be:

Green Juice - this is the staple of the Gerson Therapy for cancer and it is a good alkaline juice option. These juices need to be drunk fresh because they oxidize quickly and shouldn't be stored. Consider making them yourself, or having a juice company prepare (and perhaps deliver) them directly to you. Here is the recipe.

Carrot apple - this is the other juice recommended in the Gerson Therapy. It is 3-4 large carrots to 1 green apple. This juice can be stored in an airless container for 24 hours.

Avoiding juices that are highly acidic, or with too much spice and essential oil (ginger) is important because you don't want to damage your digest tract at all.
Dosage for juices is about 8 -10 oz. 3 - 4 times per day. Juices are very filling and you might not be able to tolerate much more than this. Remember you can drink water between your juices. The number of days you choose to do the juice fast can range from 1 -7 days.

1 day - this is a great first step in detoxifying. If you would like to go slowly and see if not eating for 1 day is even possible, take o the challenge by doing a 24 hour juice cleanse. Drink 6-8 oz. of juice 4-5x per day and see the results!

3 days - this is a beginner juice cleanse and can be done by most people. It will reduce inflammation and help to heal the gut.

4-5 days - this is more intensive and can be done by people who are ready to experience some minor detoxification reactions, gut healing and a decrease in inflammation.

6+ - this is an intensive juice cleanse that will produce results. Some autoimmune diseases can go into remission between 7-10 days of just juices, the gut will show signs of healing and inflammation will go down. You might notice your skin healing (reduced acne) or an aggravation of acne and rashes if there are a lot of toxins to be released.

Note: if you have pre-existing medical conditions and you are not sure if a juice fast is safe for you, make an appointment with a local naturopathic doctor or other medical professional educated in juice cleansing to help you decide.

Juicing + Light Meal Regime

Combine a juice cleanse and vegetarian or vegan meal each day.
Doing juices (6- 8 oz. 1-3x per day) and having 1 healthy meal is another good way to cleanse the body. Consider a meal that is high is fresh, raw greens and vegetables like a hearty salad, buddha bowl or dahl or soup.
Raw crackers accompany a vegan meal well - this is my recipe.
A healthy grain like quinoa can be added for extra density and protein.
Avoiding gluten and dairy in this meal is an important part of this regime as well as the other suggestions above for dietary and lifestyle changes.

Find Out About Heavy Metals

Naturopathic doctors can do a provocation test for heavy metals which show the tip of the iceberg for the quantity of heavy metals stored in your tissues. The plants that take us on a journey to another realm are called Entheogens "that which bring us closer to god" or "generating the divine within". These plants have medicinal properties that are easily identified such as alkaloids or tannins which act on the physical body to promote healing. They also work on an emotional and spiritual level in ways we haven't yet been able to quantify. Science will talk about DMT, the spirit molecule, as the reason behind our colourful experiences with plants like peyote, san pedro and ayahuasca. while other modalities such as homeopathy will attribute a plant's effect on our mind and body to its energetics, and the imprint it makes on the vibration of water.

What makes a plant, a plant spirit, may be due to several attributes. Plants with hallucinogenic properties such as DMT qualify. Perhaps its use in a ceremonial manner in a space made sacred by being dedicated to the event, cleansed energetically, and orchestrated by a shaman or mystic as with cacao, ayahuasca, iboga and peyote.

"La Dieta" - The Diet That Precedes A Journey

Some plant spirit medicine's ask that the participants do a diet before to help the medicine work. Cleansing the body in this way is ceremonial and practical. Removing toxins and heavy food from the body allows the medicine to be taken up easier and work deeper. Some foods can inhibit certain properties of the plant medicines such as food high in tyramine with the plant medicine ayahuasca. This is where water fasting may play a vital role.

Water fasting on its own is transformative. It has the power to detoxify the body of years of toxins, heal illnesses and make a connection to the greater life force known as the Universe, Creator or God. Water fasting is a stand alone treatment. So what if it was used to clean the body and get connected before journeying with a plant spirit?

Sacred Medicine Journey

This February we are combining the sacred act of water fasting with the transformation and healing power of plant spirit medicine. Three ceremonies separated by 24 hours of integration, talking, and spending time in nature. The medicine guide for this part is none other than Christina Sol. She has been working with the medicine, The Paloma Blanca, for over 15 years. She is a medicine guide, a shaman and mother. She'll be the first to tell you that she is ALSO a grandmother. Having Christina hold the space for the work that happens during these ceremonies is integral. As a mother, Grandmother and shaman Christina sets a safe space, held in loving strength for the difficulties on the road ahead. Ceremony can last between 2 and 5 hours (sometimes even longer depending on the person). The experiences can be ecstasy, difficulty and anywhere in-between.

This is the first time that water fasting will precede any of Christina's ceremonies and the results will be interesting to behold.

If you are interested to learn more about Sacred Medicine Journey and being part of the retreat we would be happy to hear from you. Our results will be shared here for everyone to read about so stay tuned. Fasting as a dieta before plant spirit journeying is a unique field to explore. Ketones are derived from fat tissue and created in the liver.
Why is this such a good thing? Breaking down fats regenerates and heals the body. Fat is found as adipose tissue (what we think of as fat) and plaques in the arteries. Even scar tissue is broken down. That means injuries heal from the newest to oldest throughout a fast.
There are other benefits of water fasting which include stimulation of new brain cell growth. This can be a prevention and treatment for neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's, dementia and Parkinson's diseases.
Digestion is metabolically expensive, meaning it requires lots of energy. The body expends energy breaking the bonds between food molecules. Water fasting gives the gut a chance to heal.

Preparation

Preparation for a water fast includes:

Beginning to eat a vegetarian, raw food diet as far in advance as you can

Eating a juice or smoothie diet the day before the fast

Colon hydrotherapy the day before the fast to get all the waste out

Buying an enema kit, dry skin brush + heating pad (helpful for body aches)

Clearing your schedule of obligations & commitments

Daily Routine

Sleeping and Waking Everyone wakes up at different times. During a water fast less sleep is often needed because the body is not burdened with breaking down food. But sleeping during the day is common. Waking up can feel great, it can also feel difficult - with nausea or body pains. After 3-4 days energy increases and the body feels great.
Meditation allows each person to get in touch with their inner journey. When you are fasting the mind is quiet and there is a sense of calm. Messages are easier to download and interpret which means lots of journalling happens also.
Nature is the source of all things. It is where we come from and what we are made of. Spending time in nature is essential during a water fast. We spent time at the ocean, park and garden, appreciating the endless beauty of the island and tranquility around us.
Skin Brushing is a post I have written about before here. It is the act of physically brushing your lymph fluid from the extremities towards the heart for eventual elimination by the gut. The lymph system is the body's sewer. All the by products of cellular metabolism and toxins get pushed out into the lymph. Because there is no pump for lymph fluid, like there is for blood, it relies on muscle contraction to move. Often times it sits and accumulates in distal tissues like hands and feet.
Infrared Saunas promote detoxification. Infrared is a light wavelength that we interpret as heat. It penetrates 6 cm into the body to force toxins out. Infrared saunas can help with heavy metal detox, tissue and injury repair and mental relaxation. Its an excellent space to meditate, especially if you add some crystals! Essential oils can be diffused in a small dish of water to enhance detox. Make sure to skin brush just before. My favourite essential oils for detox are: Fir balsam, lemon, eucalyptus and lavender.
Morning enemas are a water, non-retention enema. They are used to continue to move waste out of the colon for comfort and to reduce the symptoms of detox. Enemas help with nausea by reducing the amount of bile that builds up in the digestive tract. Enemas can help with brain fog and headaches. As a morning ritual it is done until the water flows out clear. We buy our enema kits here.

Lavender on Mayne Island, BC

Mind, Body, Spirit

Water fasting has been used for centuries by most religions as a way of purging the body and getting closer to god. Today is no different. Water fasting opens a portal to the seventh chakra allowing for a more direct connection to Source.
Water fasting is also a time of deep transformation. Ideas about yourself and old stories are especially susceptible for release. This water fast we did a gentle release of that which no longer serves us. The ceremony went like this:

Japanese Garden, Mayne Island

Walk the path of the Japanese Garden

Think about something you no longer want to carry forward into your new life

Pick up a piece of nature that represents this idea, image or story

Together we each said what we were willing to be free from and created an affirmation. The gathered item was discarded into the pond, or gently placed as a symbol of leaving it behind. We each chose: A rock, a leaf, pieces of old bark.

What we all ended up leaving behind were old ideas of ourselves that were no longer in purpose. The shared affirmation:

I AM WORTHY!

Breaking the Fast

Short water fasts can be broken easily with the broth of 5 Element Soup. Water enemas can be done each day until there is a bowel movement.
Small portions are very important to not overwhelm a digestive system just beginning to secrete acids and enzymes.
It is necessary to avoid meat, oils and fatty food for a few days after a short fast, and much longer if the fast is over a week.
Garlic, onion and spices are too corrosive for the gut and should be added in gradually.
Salt becomes less necessary after a fast as the taste sensation is heightened.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you feel tired during a water fast?

Water fasting forces the body to change over from glycolysis to ketosis. This process is that hardest. It is day 2-3 of a water fast and it is when you feel the least energetic. Following this transition, energy steadily picks up.
The heavy detoxification of a water fast can feel uncomfortable involving nausea or vomiting for some people. This doesn't last long and wellness returns. Everyone's experience is different depending on their medical history.

How long do you have to fast for?

The length of your fast depends on your health goals. The length usually can be determined by the severity of the illness being healed. A 3 day fast is a good break for the digestive system and an opportunity for the body to learn to regulate glucose metabolism.
Most medical water fasts should be at least 7 days and probably more like 10-14. This length is where deep healing happens from: osteoarthritis, fibroids, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, migraines and more.

How often should somebody fast?

Short fasting periods can be done frequently. There is one form of intermittent fasting where one day each week is dedicated to just water. A short 3 day fast can happen many times in a year.
Week long fasts or more shouldn't happen more than 1x per year. The body needs time to recover and the season for water fasting is important too. Spring or summer is the best time to water fast because it is the time of renewal and rebirth. It is also warm enough in most regions to fast at this time. During a water fast, your body temperature drops making even warm climates like Hawaii feel chilly!

Can I fast at home by myself?

Water fasting is done all over the world at home without medical supervision or a guide. The benefits of having a guide are tremendous. Someone with experience water fasting can help ease the process where necessary and catalyze deep emotional shifts.
Medical supervision is necessary for anyone on prescription medication, fasts longer than a week, history of chemotherapy or other toxic drugs and serious medical conditions.

Will I be able to work while I am fasting or look after my kids?

Water fasting is an intensive detox. If it is your first water fast, the chances are you are going to detox heavily. Symptoms can range from: headaches to migraines, and nausea or vomiting. Low blood pressure is common so moving quickly is not an option.
Experienced fasters can sometimes maintain a job while fasting.
Taking care of your family may be hard in the first few days of a water fast but will become much easier as the days go on.
Its my recommendation to take time off during a water fast. There are many more benefits to a water fast, than just relieving the body of food, which come from solitude and stillness, time with nature and relaxation.

Will you be holding another fast?

Our water fasts are scheduled throughout the year in various location around the world. It main role is homeostasis. It functions to regulate our appetite, temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte balance and sleep cycles. It receives information from all parts of our nervous system and responds by producing hormones. These hormones are released onto our pituitary gland which produces more hormones targeted to our organs. Together, these two areas of the brain control our kidneys, adrenal glands, sex organs, bones, muscles, thyroid gland, ability to orgasm and connect with our loved ones, as well as produce milk after birth. And that is just the short list.

In this article we explore how appetite and body weight are controlled by the hormone leptin and what fasting can do to help regulate this process.

What is leptin?

Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells. Its function is to tell the brain how much fat we have so that it can regulate energy production. When we have enough fat stored, we don't need to eat to have enough calories to run the system. Our bodies are a complex balance between the amount of energy we need, the calories required to eat and expend and how much fat we will store on our bodies to meet that need. It is an ongoing tally. The leptin system evolved so that we wouldn't starve to death and now we sure aren't. In fact we are eating ourselves to death. Why is that?

The Broken Leptin System

Leptin communicates to the brain how much fat is being carried in an effort to balance the energy out/energy in requirement. Since leptin is produced by our fat cells, when there is lots of fat, there is lots of leptin. In a state of adequate fat stores, a satiety signal is produced in the brain inhibiting us from consuming more calories. In low fat states our brain is told we are running the risk of starvation and to increase caloric intake. This is a negative feedback cycle where in the presence of adequate fat stores, the desire to consume more calories is turned off.
When people are obese, they have a lot of fat cells and therefore a lot of leptin. This over production of leptin, coupled with the over production insulin seen in obesity, causes a leptin resistance in the brain. The brain becomes less sensitive to the signals from leptin telling it there are adequate fat stores. Leptin resistance due to high levels of insulin and circulating leptin is the main physiological mechanism behind obesity. This leptin resistance the brain signals us to both eat more, and expend less energy!

What Happens When We lose Weight?

Although losing weight, and therefore fast cells and leptin would seem like a good idea, in fact it triggers the desire to eat more. When we lose fat cells and leptin, we don't automatically regain leptin sensitivity in the brain. The reduction in circulating leptin trigger a starvation effects on the brain resulting in increased appetite and decreased energy expenditure.

Other Causes of Leptin Resistance

Losing weight isn't the only cause of leptin deficiency. There are genetic defects that lead to low levels of leptin. It is estimated that approximately 3% of obese individuals have a receptor defect causing obesity. In the United States, that is roughly 2.3 million people.
Inflammation in the hypothalamic region of the brain has been shown to cause leptin resistance. Leptin has a role in regulating the immune system because of its similarity in shape and function to another inflammatory mediator called interleukin-6. The presence of the inflammatory marker CRP has been correlated with leptin resistance in obese individuals.
Other causes of leptin resistance are due to intracellular suppression of leptin signalling as well as extracellular binding of leptin, making it unavailable to the cells.

Increasing Leptin Sensitivity to Keep Weight Off

1. Reduce circulating insulin level
Insulin sensitivity can be improved many ways: reduced glucose intake, fasting, eating foods that support insulin sensitivity in cells: Chia, Maca, Cinnamon zeylenicum/cassia and the plant Gymnema sylvestre.

2. Decrease inflammation
The majority of inflammation in the system comes from the gut. Specifically eating inflammatory foods such as: processed foods, refined sugar, GMOs, non-organic foods, and allergenic foods like wheat, dairy, corn and soy. Avoiding inflammatory foods reduces inflammation in the gut. When the gut is exposed to inflammation over a period of time, the tight junctions between the gut cells becomes permeable. Meaning undigested food particles escape into the blood stream. These food particles trigger the immune system to produce immunoglobulins against them, thinking they are foreign invaders. This process creates food allergies and sensitivities. The foods we are allergic to differ person to person, so having them assessed by a physician is the first step to helping repair the gut. Other ways to repair the gut lining and decrease inflammation are taking supplements proven to help: fish oil, L-glutamine, FOS (fructooligosaccharides) and probiotics.
Getting enough sleep + exercising have been shown to lower gut inflammation.

3. Exercise
Exercise doesn't have to be stressful. Even 30 minutes a day has been proven to lower heart disease and prevent diabetes. If you are staring exercise for the first time, you can use my 15 minute rule:
- 15 minutes there
- 15 minutes back
This is basically a walk around a few blocks. Getting outside also improves mental health. Sun exposure and nitrogen intake are all correlated with better moods. Have a look into a new science called "forest bathing".

4. Fasting
Fasting, whether it is true water fasting or intermittent is a great way to increase leptin and glucose sensitivity in the cells. Intermittend fasting is the practice of have 1 day of decreased calories per week or 1 complete fasting day per week or a 16 hour fast each night. Any of these options work the same way: giving the body a chance to use up the glucose and being to use up the glycogen or glucose stores. In doing this, we train our body to respond less to the signal that glucose is gone. Because it knows there is another reserve (glycogen). What this looks like is a decrease in urgency for a snack or glucose fix. And it is freeing. Whatever your needs are during the week for work, activing or family life, there is an intermittent fasting protocol that fits your needs.
Water fasting is a more intensive form of resetting the glucose tolerance and insuline sensitivity in cells. It involves ingesting only water for a period of time. By doing this, our body uses up all the glucose and glycogen energy stores and begins a process called Ketosis - breaking down fats for fuel. For more information on how to water fast or intermittent fast, contact our clinic for personalized programs and advice.

5. MIC injections
MIC stands for methionine, inositol and choline and they are known as lipotropic or " fat metabolizing". These injections target the primary fatty deposits in the stomach, gluteus region, hips, inner thighs and under arms. They are a special formula of vitamins, nutrients and cofactors designed to support the liver to breakdown and eliminate fats from the body.

How do they help burn fat?

Methionine is an essential amino acid meaning that we have to eat it to have it. It assists in the break down of fat in the liver which lowers your body's cholesterol and removes it from the circulatory system.
The inositol component is involved in the biological signalling of fat metabolism. It reduces serum cholesterol, by promoting fat metabolism.
Choline is an essential nutrient required for the transport of fats and cholesterol. After break down, fats are transported to the liver where they are broken down in to their component parts and excreted from your body through bile.
Other nutrients in the formula are Vitamin B12, B-Complex and Carnitine. B vitamins are ubiquitous helpers in the body's biochemical processes. Carnitine is an amino acid helpful in breaking down fat and preserving muscle and transporting fat from high density areas to the liver.
Through diet, people may be deficient in any or all of these nutrients making fat burning more difficult. A routine schedule of MIC injections can support the body with the nutrients it needs to function properly as part of a fasting or medical program.

Our fasting programs are designed specifically for you, to help you lose weight in a way that works best for your body. To learn more about the best way to lose weight and reduce fat book an appointment!

References:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8532024/
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23359004
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16932334
https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/leptin-receptor-deficiency#statistics
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4556270/
https://empower.pharmacy/mic-injection.html\

http://ilonadesign.blogspot.ca/2014/01/leptin-hunger-hormone.html
http://www.nutrativaglobal.com/current-news/chia-seed-oil/

Boundaries, Integrity, Generosity

https://www.drarieljones.com/blog/boundaries-integrity-generosity

https://www.drarieljones.com/blog/boundaries-integrity-generosity#comments

Inner Work

How do we become as loving and kind as possible? This is a question posed by U.S. researcher and PhD. Brené Brown. In her work, she interviews thousands of people to find out the important answers for how to have the most meaningful and fulfilling life we possible can. Her research has led her to some answers which are both fascinating and inspiring.

Sustained Kindness and Generosity Come From Setting Good Boundaries

Setting boundaries has a vacuous meaning. It is one thing to declare and another to implement. What is interesting about boundaries is that their need seems to appear out of nowhere, like a mirage. They arise as a function of situations we are in and how it is rebounding off our ideas, feelings and personal traumas. When a personal line is crossed we can feel it: discomfort, anger, sadness, aggitation and rebuttal. When a boundary is crossed we are triggered. While triggered we are in a state of reaction, and mostly likely an ego-storm. Regardless of exactly what happens after a boundary is crossed, we are definitely no longer able to give love or act kindly.

"Boundaries are not separation or division, they are respect "Here is what is good for me, and here is what isn't".

Brown's research shows that good boundaries enable us to provide sustained loving kindness and generosity, by staying within our comfort zone.

But what about personal growth?

Personal growth is a time when we leave our comfort zone and embark on learning new things about ourselves. It is a time to fall deeper in love with who we are. The reason it is uncomfrtable is because we live with 1) ideas about who we are 2) ideas about who we should be 3) programmed afinities or aversions to certain traits, in us and others. These human characteristics prevent us from accepting and loving ourselves fully in moments when we are perceiving ourselves to be incongruent with the aforementioned ideas and pre-programming.

Growth happens in the space between the boundaries. These spaces undefined areas (situations) where we haven't yet seen a need for a boundary. And luckily for us, those situations are always arising. We couldn't possibly set up enough boundaries to never be triggered because triggers are a function of new experiences. And new experiences are happening all the time. So growth is guaranteed.

The Benefits of Boundaries: Sustainable Generosity

Empathy is not feeling for someone, it is feeling with them. With proper boundaries it can be sustaining. - Brené Brown, PhD

Dr. Brown describes compassion as " a deeply held believe that we are inextricably bound together. and empathy as "the skill set to bring compassion alive. It is how we communicate the deep love we have for people so they know that they are not alone".

Setting boundaries is integral to being able to offer compassion and kindness to those around us in a consistent manner. Perhaps the most beautiful part of this practice is that since we are all "inextricably bound together", we are, in turn, offering that empathy to ourselves.

My Wish For All Of US This New Year

To explode into compassion with empathy for ourselves and those around us. Explore the concept of boundaries and let this video be an inspiration or stepping stone to something bigger. Lets start 2017 off "B.I.G" having boundries with integrity for sustainable generosity!

Thank you to Dr. Brené Brown for her ongoing researach.

Love always,

Dr. Ariel Jones, ND
